Pay a Fine and Restitution

Pay Restitution

If you have been ordered to pay restitution as part of a sentence for an offence you were convicted of, then payments can be made at any of the Provincial Court Offices or Access PEI locations, as set out below.

Pay Fine

If you received a ticket for an infraction under legislation such as the  Highway Traffic Act, the Environmental Protection Act, Trespass Act, Off-Highway Vehicle  Act, Cannabis Act, or the Liquor Control Act, for the jurisdiction of Province of Prince Edward Island then you can pay those fines at any of the Provincial Court Offices or Access PEI locations listed below.

Payment Options

Mail in a cheque or money order, payable to Provincial Court, for the total amount of the ticket- this is the amount shown in the box marked in red on the front part of the ticket.  Fill in the back of the ticket in the box “Plea of guilty” and enclose it with your payment. PLEASE BE ADVISED: CANADA POST STRIKE IN PROGRESS: Do not send payments in the mail. Contact a provincial court office to arrange for alternative payment options.

Phone any of the locations below with a valid Visa or Mastercard Credit card (debit cards cannot be accepted by phone).

In Person at one of the locations where you can pay by cash, cheque, money order, debit,  Visa or Mastercard

Note: A parking ticket issued in Charlottetown must be paid at Charlottetown City Police.

A parking ticket issued in Summerside must be paid at Summerside City Hall.

What to expect when you get a ticket for an infraction

Be sure to read the back of the ticket. It contains Important information.

If there is an amount shown in the box marked in red on the front side of the ticket, then the ticket can be settled out of court.  That means you can plead guilty and  make a voluntary payment, without appearing in front of a judge. You must sign the back of the ticket and fill in the box indicating you are pleading guilty. If paying the ticket by mail, then send in the signed ticket with your payment.  If paying in person, take the signed ticket with you to the office where you will be paying it.

If no amount is shown on the face of the ticket, then you must appear in Court at the date, time and place set out on the ticket for plea.

If you want to contest the ticket, then you can appear before a Justice of a Peace at one of the Provincial Courthouses during normal working hours to enter a not guilty plea. The Justice of the Peace will then set a date for your trial. Your trial will NOT be held on the day you enter the not guilty plea. It will be on a later date  so that you and the Crown Prosecutor will have time to get your witnesses to court and prepare for the trial.

If you do not want to dispute the ticket, you may plead guilty before the Justice of the Peace, who will impose the fine, administrative charge and surcharge, as set out on the ticket, and determine the time you have to pay that amount.

Note:
There is a date on the front of the ticket indicating you are required to deal with the ticket by that date-either by pleading not guilty or guilty. If you have not plead guilty to the ticket or appeared at the courthouse to plead not guilty by the date indicated, then section 12 of the Summary Proceedings Act indicates that the Justice of the Peace must enter a conviction against you and impose the penalty set out on the front of the ticket.
